Wearlon® 711        - Water Based Anti-Graffiti Coating -

APPLICATION GUIDE AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Meets EPA, USDA, And FDA 21 CFR 175.300 Requirements

Surface Preparation

Degrease and clean all painted, brick, or concrete surfaces prior to coating. Read MSDS prior to application. Wearlon® 711 is a clear or pigmented topcoat and should be applied over a pigmented or clear Wearlon® 722. Wearlon® 2020.90 primer is sometime used in combination with Wearlon® 722 on difficult to bond surfaces such as marble, ceramic tile, certain metals and in extreme marine environments. Follow the instructions for the primer, and then topcoat with Wearlon® 711.

Mixing Instructions

Before mixing, shake or stir each component until homogenous. Wearlon® 711 is a 2 component product requiring a 3 to 5% addition of Wearlon® 711 acid catalyst to Wearlon® 711A . Wearlon® 711 is sold as a kit along with Wearlon® primer. Each kit contains one liter of Wearlon® 711 and the necessary amount of Wearlon® 711 catalyst to be added along with three liters of Wearlon® primer.

Application

Product can be rolled, brushed or sprayed. For best results, apply Wearlon® 711 with a urethane sponge brush and roller or with a fine tip sprayer. A Specialty Mohair ¼-inch nap manufactured by Wooster also works excellent for application. Apply all of Wearlon® 711 as a one-step coat procedure for a thin 0.5 to 0.75 mil dry coating over a 1 to 2 mil dry Wearlon® primed surface. The least amount of coating to form a continuous film gives the best results. The Wearlon® primer is best applied with a fine tip sprayer. If a roller is used then follow through with a sponge paint brush while the primer is still wet to remove any entrapped air. Allow curing for at least 20 minutes before applying the Wearlon® 711. Note: Make sure the Wearlon® 2020.90 primer as well as the Wearlon® 711 have the respective catalysts added before using. After applying the catalyzed Wearlon® 711 over the primer allow approximately 3 to 4 hours to cure before testing the anti-graffiti properties.

Graffiti Removal

In most cases, Wearlon® surfaces can be cleaned with a damp sponge. For spray paints, permanent markers or oil based paints, use Wearlon® water based Graffiti Off! cleaner. Mineral spirits, acetone, or mechanic's hand soap can be used in place of the Graffiti Off!

Coating Type

Coating Type: Water based Silicone Polyester Pot Life after catalyzing is 8 hours Shelf Life: 6 months Induction Time: None Coverage: Approx. 300 sq. ft. per liter at 0.5 to 0.75 mil DFT of Wearlon® 711. Cure Time: Complete in 4 hours at room temperature. Solids: 60% VOC: ASTM 3960 TH 0.2 lbs/gal. Storage: DO NOT FREEZE

Unique Properties

System has been designed for high performance areas where hardness is desired and chemical and abrasion resistance is required. The aliphatic backbone of Wearlon® 711 provides excellent UV resistance, which makes it particularly useful in exterior applications. One of the most outstanding features of Wearlon® 711 is its non-stick properties and ease of cleaning graffiti. Wearlon® 711 is water borne and extremely tough, even at thin deposits. At these light deposits, anti-graffiti properties can be readily obtained on wallpaper, signage, and designs where it is extremely important to maintain the natural appearance of the substrates.

Recoating

Because of the thin coating of Wearlon® 711, the Wearlon® surface can be removed by conventional means such as sanding or sandblasting. In most cases, roughing of the surface with sand paper is adequate preparation for painting over the Wearlon® surface.

CAUTION:

  • Wearlon® 711 surfaces have a low coefficient of friction and therefore tend to be slippery.
  • Wearlon® 711 catalyst contains an acid in alcohol and therefore is flammable and corrosive.
  • Wearlon® 711 contains acrylic acid. Both Wearlon® 711 catalyst and Wearlon® 711 should be handled with proper eye and body protection while providing adequate ventilation.
